SRI LANKA MORNING WEATHER FORECAST FOR 06 JANUARY 2026

Weather conditions across Sri Lanka are expected to become increasingly active as a low-level atmospheric disturbance in the Bay of Bengal, to the southeast of the island, has intensified into a low-pressure area, according to the Department of Meteorology. As a result, showery conditions over the island, particularly in the Northern, North-Central, Eastern, Uva and Central Provinces, are expected to enhance from January 8. The development of this low-pressure system is likely to strengthen cloud formation, rainfall activity and wind patterns across several regions during the coming days.

Showers are expected to occur at times in the Eastern, Central, Uva, North-Central and Northern Provinces. These areas may experience intermittent rainfall throughout the day and night, with cloudy conditions prevailing for long periods. Heavy rainfall of around 100 millimetres is likely at some places in the Uva Province and in the districts of Nuwara Eliya, Matale, Polonnaruwa, Batticaloa and Ampara. Rainfall intensity may vary from location to location depending on localized atmospheric conditions, with some areas receiving heavier and more persistent showers than others.

In other parts of the island, showers or thundershowers may occur at several places after 1.00 p.m. Afternoon and evening thundershowers are common during periods of increased atmospheric instability, especially when daytime heating combines with high moisture levels associated with a developing low-pressure system. These thundershowers are expected to be scattered across western, southern and interior regions, contributing to generally unsettled weather conditions during the latter part of the day.

Strong winds reaching speeds of around 50 kilometres per hour can be expected at times over the eastern slopes of the central hills, as well as in the Northern, North-Central, North-Western and Eastern Provinces, and in the Hambantota, Gampaha, Colombo and Monaragala districts. Wind conditions may fluctuate throughout the day, with occasional gusty periods occurring alongside showers or thundershowers. Such winds may be more noticeable in coastal areas, open plains and elevated terrain.

The intensification of the atmospheric disturbance into a low-pressure area highlights the active nature of the current weather pattern affecting Sri Lanka. As the system continues to influence regional weather conditions, increased rainfall and variable wind patterns are expected to persist, particularly in areas already experiencing frequent showers. Weather conditions may continue to evolve depending on the movement and strength of the low-pressure system in the Bay of Bengal.

The general public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize possible damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers, as rapidly changing weather conditions may occur in several parts of the island during the forecast period.
