Low-Pressure Area Develops in Bay of Bengal; Heavy Rains Expected from January 8
The Department of Meteorology has issued an Amber Advisory warning of worsening weather conditions across several provinces, following the intensification of a low-level atmospheric disturbance into a low-pressure area over the southeast Bay of Bengal.
According to Bulletin No: 01 TCA/26/01/05/01, issued by the Natural Hazards Early Warning Centre at 11.30 p.m. on January 5, the developing low-pressure system to the southeast of Sri Lanka is expected to significantly enhance rainfall activity over the island in the coming days.
Meteorologists stated that showery conditions are likely to intensify from January 8, particularly affecting the Northern, North-Central, Eastern, Uva, and Central provinces. The prevailing weather pattern may lead to persistent rainfall, raising the risk of flooding, landslides, and other weather-related hazards in vulnerable areas.
The Department of Meteorology emphasized that it is closely monitoring the behavior and movement of the low-pressure system, and further advisories will be issued if there are significant changes in intensity or track.
The general public, local authorities, and disaster management agencies have been urged to remain vigilant and stay updated with future weather forecasts and official bulletins. Residents in high-risk regions are advised to take necessary precautions to minimize potential damage caused by heavy rainfall and associated impacts.
Authorities also cautioned against complacency, noting that weather conditions may deteriorate rapidly as the system evolves. Continuous monitoring and preparedness are essential during this period.
