Rough Sea Conditions and Strong Winds Expected Around Sri Lanka
Colombo, December 29, 2025 — The Department of Meteorology has issued a marine weather advisory warning of rough sea conditions and strong north-easterly winds in several sea areas around Sri Lanka during the next 24 hours.
According to the forecast, showers may occur at a few locations in sea areas off the coast from Kankasanthurai to Pottuvil via Trincomalee, affecting parts of the northern and eastern coastal waters. In addition, showers or isolated thundershowers are expected at a few places in sea areas off the coast from Kalutara to Hambantota via Galle, particularly during the evening or night.
North-easterly winds will dominate marine conditions, with wind speeds ranging between 30 and 40 kmph. However, stronger winds reaching 45 to 50 kmph are likely at times in sea areas off the coast from Colombo to Kankasanthurai via Puttalam, as well as from Matara to Pottuvil via Hambantota.
Due to these intensified winds, the sea will be rough at times in the above-mentioned coastal stretches. Meanwhile, other sea areas around the island are expected to remain moderate, though conditions may temporarily worsen during thundershowers.
The Department of Meteorology advises fishermen, naval operators, and small craft users to exercise caution, especially in regions experiencing rough seas, strong winds, and thunderstorms. Coastal communities are also urged to stay alert to sudden changes in marine weather conditions.
