Sri Lanka Weather Update: Heavy Showers, Strong Winds and Misty Conditions Expected Over Next 36 Hours
Issued at 04.00 p.m. on 27 December 2025
The Department of Meteorology forecasts active weather conditions across several parts of Sri Lanka during the next 36 hours, with frequent showers, thundershowers, strong winds, and misty mornings expected in many regions.

According to the latest update, Uva Province along with the districts of Ampara, Batticaloa, and Hambantota will experience several spells of showers, increasing the likelihood of wet conditions throughout the day.
Meanwhile, showers or thundershowers are expected at several places in Sabaragamuwa Province and in Galle, Matara, and Kalutara districts after 2.00 p.m. The Department warns that fairly heavy rainfall exceeding 50 mm may occur at some locations, raising concerns over localized flooding and temporary disruptions.
A few showers may also occur in the Northern Province and in Matale, Nuwara-Eliya, Polonnaruwa, and Trincomalee districts, indicating widespread but uneven rainfall activity across the island.
In addition to rainfall, fairly strong winds of around 40 kmph can be expected at times over the eastern slopes of the central hills, Northern and North-Western provinces, and in Anuradhapura, Hambantota, Monaragala, and Trincomalee districts. These conditions may pose risks to temporary structures, trees, and power lines.

Misty conditions are likely during the early morning hours in parts of the Western, Sabaragamuwa, and Central provinces, as well as in Galle and Matara districts, potentially affecting road visibility.
The general public is advised to remain alert, take necessary precautions against lightning and strong winds, and stay updated with future weather advisories issued by the Department of Meteorology.
