Heavy Afternoon Showers Expected in Parts of Sri Lanka Over Next 36 Hours
Issued at 04.00 p.m. on 25 December 2025
Weather conditions across Sri Lanka during the next 36 hours will be marked by isolated showers in several regions and heavy afternoon rainfall in the southwest, according to the Department of Meteorology.

A few showers are expected in the Northern, Eastern, and Uva Provinces, as well as in the Polonnaruwa, Matale, and Nuwara Eliya districts.
Meanwhile, showers or thundershowers are forecast at several locations in the Sabaragamuwa Province and in the Galle, Matara, and Kalutara districts, mainly after 2.00 p.m. Meteorologists warn that fairly heavy rainfall exceeding 50 mm may occur at some places, increasing the risk of localized flooding and soil instability.

Early morning misty conditions are also expected in parts of the Sabaragamuwa and Central Provinces, along with Kalutara, Badulla, Galle, and Matara districts, which may reduce visibility on roads.
The public is urged to remain alert to sudden weather changes, particularly during thunderstorms, and to take necessary precautions against strong winds and lightning-related hazards.
