Update 5:Cyclonic Storm ‘Murasu’ to Weaken Gradually Over Bay of Bengal; Andhra Pradesh Coast Under Watch

Visakhapatnam, November 3, 2026: Severe Cyclonic Storm ‘Murasu’ over the south coastal Andhra Pradesh region is expected to move north-northwestwards and gradually weaken over the next several hours, according to the latest weather bulletin.

The storm moved north-northwestwards at a speed of 6 kmph during the six hours preceding 11:30 AM IST on Tuesday. At that time, it was centred near latitude 15.9°N and longitude 80.1°E, approximately 40 km west of Bapatla, 50 km north of Ongole, 90 km southwest of Vijayawada, 110 km north of Kavali and 120 km west-southwest of Machilipatnam in Andhra Pradesh.

The maximum sustained wind speed was estimated at 85–95 kmph, with gusts reaching 105 kmph at 11:30 AM IST.

Storm expected to weaken

The weather bulletin forecasts that Murasu will continue moving north-northwestwards and weaken into a cyclonic storm by around 2:30 PM IST on November 3, with wind speeds of 80–90 kmph and gusts of up to 100 kmph.

The system is then expected to weaken further into a deep depression by around 11:30 PM IST on November 3, with wind speeds of 55–65 kmph and gusts of up to 75 kmph. By approximately 5:30 AM IST on November 4, it is forecast to weaken into a depression, with wind speeds of 40–50 kmph and gusts reaching 60 kmph.

The forecast track indicates a gradual north-northwestward movement, although some uncertainty remains regarding the system’s direction and speed as it weakens.

Warm sea conditions supporting the system

According to the bulletin, sea surface temperatures over the west-central and southwest Bay of Bengal are around 29°C. The ocean heat content and prevailing atmospheric conditions are supporting convective activity around the storm.

However, interaction with land, together with changes in atmospheric circulation and wind patterns, is expected to contribute to the system’s gradual weakening.

Satellite imagery at 11:30 AM IST showed the storm over coastal Andhra Pradesh and the adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal, with scattered to broken cloud bands and embedded intense to very intense convection.

Continuous monitoring

The cyclonic system remains under continuous surveillance by Doppler Weather Radars at Machilipatnam and Visakhapatnam.

Authorities and residents in affected areas should follow the latest official weather bulletins and local advisories as the system moves inland and weakens.
