Sri Lanka’s death toll from the severe weather that has battered the island in recent days has risen to 639, the Disaster Management Center (DMC) reported. Authorities confirmed that 203 people remain missing as rescue and recovery operations continue.
The extreme weather has affected all 25 districts, impacting 1,824,771 individuals from 529,741 families, according to the DMC’s latest update.
As of now, 86,040 people representing 27,145 families have been displaced and are taking shelter in 878 relief centres established across the country.
The DMC further noted significant structural damage, with 5,350 houses completely destroyed and an additional 86,882 homes partially damaged due to floods, landslides, and strong winds triggered by the adverse conditions.
Authorities continue to warn of potential risks as unstable weather persists, urging communities in vulnerable areas to follow evacuation orders and stay alert to official advisories.
