Weather conditions across Sri Lanka are expected to become more favorable for afternoon thundershowers as the country approaches October. Atmospheric conditions are gradually becoming supportive of increased thunderstorm activity over most parts of the island from October 1.
For Wednesday, September 30, showers or thundershowers may occur at several places in the Uva, Eastern and Central provinces, as well as in the Polonnaruwa and Mullaittivu districts after 1.00 p.m. Fairly heavy rainfall exceeding 50 mm is possible at some locations in these areas. Residents in affected regions should remain alert to sudden changes in weather during the afternoon and evening.
A few showers may also occur during the morning in coastal areas of the Western Province and in the Galle and Matara districts. Meanwhile, misty conditions are expected at some places in the Sabaragamuwa and Central provinces during the early morning hours.
The public is advised to take adequate precautions during thundershowers, as temporary localized strong winds and lightning may occur.
Sea Areas Forecast
Showers are expected at a few places in the sea areas extending from Chilaw to Matara via Colombo and Galle. During the evening or night, showers or thundershowers may develop at a few places in the sea areas from Mullaittivu to Pottuvil via Trincomalee and Batticaloa.
Winds will be south-westerly at speeds of 20–30 kmph. Wind speeds may occasionally increase up to 45 kmph in the sea areas extending from Galle to Pottuvil via Hambantota and from Puttalam to Kankasanthurai via Mannar.
These sea areas are expected to be fairly rough at times, while temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas may occur during thundershowers. Naval and fishing communities are advised to remain attentive to changing weather conditions when planning marine activities.
