A low-level atmospheric disturbance in the vicinity of Sri Lanka is expected to significantly influence weather conditions (22 February 2026), bringing widespread showers and thundershowers across many parts of the island. Authorities urge the public to remain vigilant, particularly in areas forecast to receive intense rainfall.
Heavy rainfall exceeding 100 mm is likely at some locations in the Central, Uva and Sabaragamuwa provinces, as well as in the Ampara, Batticaloa and Polonnaruwa districts. In addition, fairly heavy falls above 75 mm are expected at some places in other parts of the country. Such rainfall may lead to localized flooding, landslides in hilly areas, and temporary disruptions to transport and daily activities. Residents in vulnerable areas are strongly advised to take adequate precautions to minimize potential damages caused by heavy rain, strong winds and lightning associated with thundershowers.
Several spells of showers will occur in the Northern and Eastern provinces and in the Puttalam district throughout the day. Elsewhere, showers or thundershowers are expected at several places after 1.00 p.m., particularly during the afternoon and evening hours.
Misty conditions can be expected during the early morning in parts of the Central and Sabaragamuwa provinces and in the Galle, Matara and Kalutara districts, reducing visibility for motorists.
In the sea areas around the island during the next 24 hours, showers or thundershowers will occur at times off the coast from Galle to Trincomalee via Hambantota and Batticaloa. Winds will be north-westerly to northerly from Mullaittivu to Colombo via Kankasanthurai and Puttalam, and variable elsewhere, with speeds of 20–30 kmph. Sea conditions will be moderate; however, temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas may develop during thundershowers.
