Atmospheric conditions are becoming increasingly favorable for thundershowers across most parts of Sri Lanka, and showery conditions are expected to intensify on 21 February 2026. A noticeable increase in rainfall activity is likely, particularly in several key provinces.
Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the Northern, North-Central, Eastern, Uva and Central provinces, as well as in the Hambantota District. These areas are expected to experience frequent spells of rain throughout the day. In other parts of the island, showers or thundershowers may develop at several places after 1.00 p.m., mainly during the afternoon and evening hours.
Heavy rainfall exceeding 100 mm is likely at some locations in the Central, Uva and Sabaragamuwa provinces and in the Batticaloa, Ampara and Polonnaruwa districts. Such intense rainfall may lead to localized flooding, particularly in low-lying and vulnerable areas. Fairly heavy rainfall above 50 mm is also expected at some places elsewhere in the country. Residents are advised to remain alert and take necessary precautions.
Misty conditions can be expected during the early hours of the morning in parts of the Central and Sabaragamuwa provinces and in the Galle, Matara and Kalutara districts. Reduced visibility may affect motorists, especially in hilly regions.
The general public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers. Avoiding open areas and seeking safe shelter during lightning activity is strongly recommended.
Regarding sea areas around the island during the next 24 hours, the low-pressure area has weakened but still persists over the southwest Bay of Bengal, southeast of Sri Lanka. Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in sea areas extending from Galle to Trincomalee via Hambantota and Batticaloa. Winds will be north-easterly at 30–40 kmph, increasing up to 45–50 kmph at times in sea areas from Negombo to Kankasanthurai via Puttalam. These sea areas may be fairly rough at times, while other sea areas will remain moderate. Temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas can be expected during thundershowers.
