Weather conditions across Sri Lanka on 05 February 2026 are expected to remain unsettled, with widespread rainfall affecting many parts of the island. Showers will occur at times in the Northern, North-Central, Eastern, Uva, and Central provinces, as well as in the Hambantota district. Fairly heavy rainfall of around 75 mm is likely at some locations in Uva province and in the Batticaloa, Ampara, and Hambantota districts, increasing the risk of temporary flooding in low-lying areas.
During the afternoon and evening after 2.00 p.m., showers or thundershowers may occur at several places in other parts of the island. In some areas, fairly heavy showers exceeding 50 mm are expected. These thundershowers may be accompanied by strong gusty winds and lightning, and the public is advised to take adequate safety precautions, avoid open areas, and secure loose objects.
Misty conditions are likely during the early morning hours in parts of the Western, Sabaragamuwa, and Central provinces, as well as in the Galle, Matara, and Badulla districts. Motorists are urged to exercise caution due to reduced visibility, especially in hilly and interior regions.
For the sea areas around Sri Lanka, showers will occur at several places off the coasts extending from Pottuvil to Kankasanthurai via Batticaloa and Trincomalee. Additionally, showers or thundershowers may develop in other sea areas, particularly during the evening or night.
Winds will be north-easterly, with speeds of 30–40 kmph, increasing up to 45–50 kmph at times in sea areas off the coast extending from Colombo to Kankasanthurai via Puttalam and from Matara to Pottuvil via Hambantota. As a result, these sea areas will be fairly rough at times, while other areas remain moderate. Very rough seas and strong gusty winds may occur during thundershowers, and fishing and naval communities are advised to remain vigilant.
