Showers are expected to affect several parts of Sri Lanka on Friday, 28 August 2026, with wet weather forecast for the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Southern and North-Western provinces, as well as the Kandy and Nuwara Eliya districts. Fairly heavy rainfall exceeding 75 mm is likely at some locations in the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces and in Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Galle and Matara districts.
Meanwhile, a few showers or thundershowers may occur in the Uva Province and the Ampara and Batticaloa districts after 2.00 p.m. Mainly dry weather is expected to prevail across other parts of the island.
Strong winds of around 40–50 kmph may occur at times over the western slopes of the Central Hills, the Northern, North-Central and North-Western provinces, and the Trincomalee, Monaragala, Hambantota and Matale districts. The public is advised to take precautions against localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.
The sun will also be directly overhead near several northern locations, including Kokkuvil, Nallur, Kodikamam and Nagar Kovil, at approximately 12.11 noon.
Sea Areas Forecast
Showers may occur in sea areas from Chilaw to Hambantota via Colombo and Galle. South-westerly winds will generally range from 30–40 kmph, increasing to 50–60 kmph in some northern and southeastern sea areas.
Rough seas are expected from Kankasanthurai to Puttalam via Mannar and from Hambantota to Pottuvil. Wave heights of 2–3 metres are possible from Puttalam to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle and Matara. Coastal communities and fishing and naval communities are urged to remain vigilant, particularly near the Beruwala-to-Matara coast where swell-related sea surges are possible.
