Several spells of showers are expected in parts of Sri Lanka on 20 July 2026, with wet weather continuing in the Western, Sabaragamuwa and North-Western provinces. According to the latest weather forecast, showers will also affect the districts of Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Galle and Matara throughout the day.
Meanwhile, a few showers or thundershowers may develop in the Ampara and Monaragala districts after 2.00 p.m. Most other parts of the island are expected to experience mainly dry weather, providing favorable conditions for outdoor activities.
Strong winds remain a key feature of today’s forecast. Wind speeds of 40–50 kmph are expected at times over the western slopes of the Central Hills, as well as in the Northern, North-Central, Central and North-Western provinces. Similar windy conditions are also expected in the Ratnapura, Hambantota and Trincomalee districts. Residents are advised to take necessary precautions to reduce the risk of damage from temporary strong winds and lightning associated with thundershowers.
Sea Condition
For sea areas around Sri Lanka, a few showers are likely in the coastal waters extending from Negombo to Matara via Colombo and Galle. South-westerly winds will blow at 30–40 kmph, increasing to 50–60 kmph at times in the sea areas from Kalpitiya to Kankasanthurai via Mannar and from Hambantota to Pottuvil. Winds may also reach 50 kmph in the sea areas from Trincomalee to Kankasanthurai via Mullaittivu.
Sea conditions will be rough at times in the waters from Kalpitiya to Kankasanthurai and from Hambantota to Pottuvil, while the sea off Trincomalee to Kankasanthurai may become fairly rough. Fishermen and mariners are advised to exercise extra caution before heading out to sea.
