Several spells of showers are expected across parts of Sri Lanka on Wednesday, 19 August, with wet weather mainly affecting the southwestern regions and selected central districts. Showers will occur at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa and North-Western provinces, as well as in Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Galle and Matara districts.
Showers or thundershowers may develop at a few places in the Uva Province and in the Ampara and Batticaloa districts after 2.00 p.m. However, mainly dry weather is expected to prevail across the other areas of the island.
Fairly strong winds of around 30–40 kmph may occur at times over the western slopes of the Central Hills, Northern, North-Central, North-Western and Southern provinces, as well as in the Trincomalee District. The public is advised to take adequate precautions against temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.
Sea Areas Forecast
Showers may occur at a few places in the sea areas extending from Chilaw to Matara via Colombo and Galle. Winds will be westerly to south-westerly at speeds of 30–40 kmph.
Wind speeds may increase to 50–60 kmph at times in the sea areas extending from Kankasanthurai to Kalpitiya via Mannar and from Matara to Pottuvil via Hambantota. These areas are expected to be rough at times.
Wave heights may reach around 2.5–3.0 metres in the nearshore sea areas from Negombo to Pottuvil via Galle and Matara. Coastal inundation is also possible in these areas. Naval and fishing communities, along with coastal residents, are urged to remain vigilant and follow official weather updates.
