Sri Lanka Weather Forecast: Heavy Rains Expected in Several Provinces Today
The Department of Meteorology forecasts enhanced showery conditions across several parts of Sri Lanka today, as a low-level atmospheric disturbance develops to the east of the island. This system is expected to bring widespread rainfall, heavy showers, and occasional thunderstorms over many provinces.
Showers will occur at times in the Eastern, Central, North-Central, and Uva provinces, as well as in the Hambantota District. Meteorologists warn that fairly heavy rainfall exceeding 75 mm is likely at some locations in the Central and Uva provinces, particularly in the Batticaloa and Ampara districts.
The Northern Province is expected to experience several spells of showers throughout the day, while showers or thundershowers may develop in other regions after 2.00 p.m., with rainfall amounts exceeding 50 mm in certain areas.
A few showers may occur in coastal areas of the North-Western and Western provinces, including Galle and Matara districts. These areas may experience brief but intense rainfall during evening hours.
The general public is advised to take adequate precautions against temporary localized strong winds and lightning associated with thundershowers. Motorists, fishermen, and residents in flood- and landslide-prone areas are urged to remain alert and follow official weather updates.
