The National Building Research Organisation (NBRO) has issued landslide early warnings across 11 districts, with the highest-level Level III (Red) warning in effect for selected areas of Galle, Kandy and Nuwara Eliya.
The warnings are valid from 4.00 p.m. on 25 September 2026 until 4.00 p.m. on 26 September 2026, as authorities continue to monitor rainfall and the potential for landslides in vulnerable areas.
The affected districts are Colombo, Galle, Gampaha, Hambantota, Kalutara, Kandy, Kegalle, Kurunegala, Matara, Nuwara Eliya and Ratnapura.
Level III Red Warning
The highest-level warning has been issued for several Divisional Secretariat areas and surrounding locations.
In Galle District, the Red warning covers Neluwa, Nagoda, Niyagama and Thawalama.
In Kandy District, the affected areas are Ganga Ihala Korale, Udapalatha, Doluwa and Pasbage Korale.
In Nuwara Eliya District, the Red warning applies to Kothmale West, Ambagamuwa, Kotmale East and Norwood.
Residents in these areas should remain particularly alert to changing ground conditions and follow any safety instructions issued by the authorities.
Level II Amber Warning
The Level II (Amber) warning covers several other areas.
In Galle, warnings are in force for Elpitiya, Baddegama and Karandeniya. Walallawita in Kalutara is also under the Amber warning.
In Kandy, the affected areas include Deltota, Udunuwara, Gangawata Korale, Yatinuwara and Panvila.
The Amber warning also covers Aranayake, Dehiowita, Mawanella, Deraniyagala and Yatiyanthota in Kegalle, Thalawakelle in Nuwara Eliya, and Ratnapura and Pelmadulla in Ratnapura District.
Level I Yellow Warning
The NBRO has also issued Level I (Yellow) warnings for selected areas across several districts.
These include Seethawaka and Padukka in Colombo; Attanagalla and Mirigama in Gampaha; and Katuwana and Walasmulla in Hambantota.
In Kalutara, the Yellow warning applies to Ingiriya and Bulathsinhala.
A number of Kandy areas are also included: Hatharaliyadda, Poojapitiya, Medadumbara, Kundasale, Ududumbara, Thumpane, Akurana, Pathadumbara, Harispattuwa and Pathahewaheta.
In Kegalle, the warning covers Warakapola, Bulathkohupitiya, Galigamuwa, Kegalle and Ruwanwella. The latest warning also lists Mallawapitiya, Alawwa, Polgahawela and Mawathagama.
In Matara District, Pitabeddara, Kotapola and Pasgoda are under the Yellow warning.
The warning also covers Nuwara Eliya in Nuwara Eliya District and Elapatha, Ayagama, Nivithigala, Kuruwita and Kalawana in Ratnapura District.
Public Urged to Remain Alert
Residents in areas covered by the warnings are advised to remain vigilant, particularly where prolonged or heavy rainfall could affect unstable slopes and other vulnerable locations.
People living in landslide-prone areas should closely monitor official updates and follow instructions from local authorities if conditions deteriorate.
The warning remains valid until 4.00 p.m. on 26 September 2026, unless further updates are issued by the NBRO.
