Sri Lanka’s Natural Hazards Early Warning Centre has issued an advisory for heavy rain in the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces, as well as the districts of Kandy, Nuwara-Eliya, Galle and Matara. The advisory was issued at 6.00 a.m. on Sunday, 20 September 2026, and remains valid until 6.00 a.m. on Monday, 21 September.
According to the weather advisory, showers or thundershowers are expected to occur at times in the affected areas due to the prevailing active Southwest Monsoon. The centre has warned that some locations could experience heavy rainfall exceeding 100 millimetres.
Residents in the affected provinces and districts have been urged to remain alert and take necessary precautions as the rainy conditions continue. People living in areas vulnerable to flooding, landslides and other rain-related hazards are advised to pay attention to official weather updates and follow safety instructions from the relevant authorities.
The latest rainfall observations recorded by automatic weather stations also indicate significant rainfall in several districts. The highest rainfall reported during the observation period was 103.5 millimetres at Maliboda in the Kegalle District.
Other notable rainfall measurements included 93.5 millimetres at the Dellawa Tea Factory station in Galle, 87.5 millimetres at the Gurudiyapotha Tea Factory station, also in Galle, and 83.0 millimetres at WKK Lanka Co. (PVT) Ltd in the Kalutara District.
The rainfall figures represent observations received between 8.30 a.m. on 19 September and 6.00 a.m. on 20 September 2026.
The Natural Hazards Early Warning Centre has classified the advisory under the amber level, meaning the public should be prepared for potentially hazardous weather conditions. Authorities and the public are encouraged to remain vigilant, particularly in areas where heavy rain may lead to temporary flooding, slippery roads and disruptions to daily activities.
