December 18, 2025 — The Irrigation Department has issued a flood warning valid for the next 48 hours for several low-lying areas along the Mahaweli River Basin, following heavy rainfall received since last night (December 17) in upstream catchment areas.
According to the department, rising water levels in the Mahaweli River could lead to flood conditions in the Divisional Secretariat (DS) Divisions of Kinniya, Muttur, Kantale, Seruvila, Welikanda, Lankapura, Thamankaduwa, and Dimbulagala during the next two days.
Authorities have also warned of a risk of inundation along key transport routes, including the Batticaloa–Polonnaruwa Road in the Gallella area, as well as the access road to the Somawathiya Raja Maha Vihara. Surrounding areas of the temple may also be affected.
In view of the potential flooding, devotees planning to visit the Somawathiya Raja Maha Vihara are strongly advised to avoid travel to the area until further notice over the coming days.
Meanwhile, residents living close to the Mahaweli River in the affected areas are urged to remain highly vigilant and take necessary precautionary measures to safeguard lives and property against possible flood situations.
The Disaster Management Centre and other relevant authorities have been requested to take immediate and adequate action to monitor the situation and implement flood mitigation measures as required.
