Heavy Rainfall and Strong Winds Forecast for December 17

Showery conditions are expected to persist across large parts of Sri Lanka as an easterly wave continues to influence the island’s weather, the Department of Meteorology said.
Showers will occur at times in the Northern, North-Central, Eastern, Uva and Central provinces. Heavy rainfall exceeding 100 mm is likely at some locations in the Eastern and Central provinces, particularly in the Badulla and Polonnaruwa districts.
In the remaining areas of the island, showers or thundershowers may develop at several places after 1.00 p.m., with fairly heavy rainfall above 75 mm expected at some places.
Meanwhile, strong winds of around 40–50 kmph can be expected at times over the eastern slopes of the central hills, and across the Northern, North-Central and North-Western provinces, as well as in the Trincomalee, Hambantota and Monaragala districts.
Misty conditions are also expected at some places in the Sabaragamuwa and Central provinces, and in the Galle and Matara districts, during the early morning hours.
The general public is advised to take adequate precautions to minimize potential damage caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.
