A total of 806 individuals from 238 families in the Badulla District have been evacuated from their homes due to the heightened risk of landslides, officials said.
Badulla District Secretary Prabath Abeywardena stated that the evacuations were carried out on the advice of the National Building Research Organisation (NBRO), following heavy rainfall brought on by the activation of the northeastern monsoon.
Evacuation efforts were conducted yesterday (10), and all affected residents were moved to designated safe centres.
Out of the district’s 15 Divisional Secretariat divisions, 14 have been affected by the adverse weather conditions. The Rideemaliyadda division, which previously reported no impact, has now also been affected.
Providing further details, the District Secretary said:
- Kalukele mountain landslide: 129 individuals from 50 families
- Soranathota: 157 people from 60 families
- Uva Paranagama: 127 people from 40 families
- Rideemaliyadda: 139 people from 50 families
- Meegahakivula: 158 people from 35 families
- Hali-Ela: 87 individuals from 18 families
- Ella: 148 people from 34 families
In total, 806 people from 238 families were evacuated due to landslide threats.
