Sri Lanka Weather Forecast for 29 October 2026: Showers Expected in Several Areas as Cyclone Arnab Weakens

Sri Lanka is expected to experience showers in several provinces on Thursday, 29 October, while the remnants of Cyclone Arnab continue to weaken near the eastern coast of India. The Department of Meteorology has forecast periods of rain in parts of the western, central and southern regions, with thunderstorms possible in selected areas during the afternoon.

Rainfall Forecast for Sri Lanka

Several spells of showers are expected in the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces, as well as in the Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Galle and Matara districts.

Meanwhile, showers or thundershowers may occur at a few places in the Uva Province and the Batticaloa, Ampara and Hambantota districts after 1.00 p.m.

Mainly fair weather conditions are expected to prevail in other parts of the island.

The public is advised to take appropriate precautions against temporary localized strong winds and lightning that may occur during thundershowers.

Cyclone Arnab Weakens Over India

According to the Department of Meteorology, Cyclonic Storm Arnab, which was located over the north coastal Andhra Pradesh region of India, has weakened into a deep depression.

The system is expected to continue moving nearly northwards, weakening further into a depression by the morning of 29 October and into a low-pressure area by 5.30 p.m. The influence of the system on the deep-sea areas of the Bay of Bengal is also expected to gradually decrease.

Following the weakening of the system, the warning restricting multi-day fishing boats and naval activities in the deep southwestern Bay of Bengal has been withdrawn.

Sea Conditions and Wind Warnings

Showers or thundershowers are forecast at several places in sea areas around Sri Lanka. Southwesterly winds are expected at speeds of 25–35 kmph, with speeds increasing to 45 kmph at times in sea areas extending from Puttalam to Mullaitivu via Kankasanthurai and from Galle to Pottuvil via Hambantota.

These sea areas may become fairly rough at times. During thundershowers, temporarily strong gusty winds of 60–70 kmph and very rough seas are possible.

Fishing communities and other sea users are advised to remain alert and follow official weather updates as conditions change.
