Sri Lanka is expected to experience a mix of showers and thundershowers in several areas today, with rainfall activity becoming more prominent during the afternoon.showers or thundershowers may occur at several places in the Uva, Eastern and Central provinces and in the Polonnaruwa and Mullaittivu districts after 2.00 p.m.
Fairly heavy rainfall exceeding 50 mm is possible at some locations in these areas. Residents in the affected regions should remain attentive to changing weather conditions, particularly during afternoon and evening thundershowers.
During the morning, a few showers may occur in the coastal areas of the Western Province and in the Galle and Matara districts. Other areas of the island may experience comparatively less rainfall activity during the morning hours.
The public is advised to take adequate precautions to minimize possible damage from temporary localized strong winds and lightning that may occur during thundershowers. People outdoors should remain alert when thunderstorms develop.
Sea Areas Around Sri Lanka
Showers are expected at a few places in the sea areas extending from Chilaw to Matara via Colombo and Galle. During the evening or night, showers or thundershowers may also occur in the sea areas extending from Mullaittivu to Pottuvil via Trincomalee and Batticaloa.
Winds around the island will be south-westerly, with speeds of 25–35 kmph. Wind speeds may increase to 45–50 kmph at times in the sea areas extending from Galle to Pottuvil via Hambantota.
As a result, these sea areas are expected to be fairly rough at times. Mariners and fishing communities should remain cautious, particularly when thunderstorms develop, as temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas can occur during thundershowers.
