The Meteorology Department has issued a high wave advisory for several coastal and sea areas around Sri Lanka, warning of increased wave heights and possible seawater inundation along parts of the southern coastline.
The advisory, issued by the Natural Hazards Early Warning Centre at 9.00 a.m. on 26 September 2026, will remain valid until 9.00 a.m. on 27 September 2026.
According to the advisory, wave heights in the sea areas extending from Chilaw to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle and Matara could increase to around 2.0–3.0 metres.
Seawater Inundation Possible
Authorities have also warned of a possibility of seawater entering nearshore areas along the coast from Beruwala to Matara via Galle.
The conditions could affect coastal communities, particularly those living or carrying out activities close to the shoreline.
The Marine Meteorological Division has urged naval and fishing communities operating in the affected sea areas to remain vigilant and take appropriate precautions.
Coastal residents in the areas mentioned in the advisory are also advised to stay alert to changing sea conditions and follow further updates issued by the Department of Meteorology.
The advisory highlights the need for extra caution along the affected coastline while the high-wave conditions persist.
