A deep depression over the westcentral and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal is continuing to move west-northwestwards and is expected to cross the north Andhra Pradesh–south Odisha coast later today, according to the latest Tropical Weather Outlook issued by the Regional Specialised Meteorological Centre (RSMC), New Delhi.
The system moved westwards at around 5 km/h during the past six hours and was located at 0600 UTC on 23 September 2026 over the westcentral and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal. It was positioned approximately 184 km northeast of Kalingapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, 120 km east-northeast of Visakhapatnam, 150 km south-southeast of Gopalpur and 340 km southwest of Puri.
The weather system is very likely to continue moving west-northwestwards and cross the North Andhra Pradesh–South Odisha coast between Visakhapatnam and Gopalpur, close to Kalingapatnam, as a deep depression between 3.00 p.m. and 6.00 p.m. UTC on 23 September.
At present, the system has maximum sustained winds of around 55–65 km/h, with gusts reaching up to 75 km/h. The estimated central pressure is around 995 hPa.
System Expected to Weaken After Landfall
Forecast guidance indicates that the system will gradually weaken after moving inland. It is expected to remain a deep depression initially before weakening into a depression on 24 September and further into a well-marked low-pressure area by 26 September.
Sea conditions over the westcentral and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal remain very rough, and strong winds are associated with the system.
Satellite imagery shows intense to very intense convection around the system, with cloud activity extending across parts of the Bay of Bengal and neighbouring areas.
Meteorological guidance continues to show high confidence in the forecast track and intensity of the system. However, there is some variation among numerical weather models regarding its intensity before landfall.
The latest assessment indicates that the deep depression will continue moving west-northwestwards and cross the north Andhra Pradesh–south Odisha coast near Kalingapatnam later on 23 September.
Fishing communities and vessels operating in the affected sea areas are advised to closely follow official weather warnings and updates as the system approaches the coast.
