The prevailing heavy rainy conditions across Sri Lanka are gradually easing as the low-pressure area that developed over the southwest Bay of Bengal continues to move away from the island. Although rainfall intensity is expected to reduce compared to previous days, several parts of the country will still experience showery conditions.
Several spells of showers are forecast in the Northern, North-Central and North-Western provinces, as well as in the Trincomalee district. Coastal areas in the Kalutara, Galle and Matara districts may also experience morning showers. Meanwhile, showers or thundershowers are likely at a few places in the Central and Sabaragamuwa provinces and in the Kalutara, Galle and Matara districts after 2.00 p.m. Fairly heavy rainfall exceeding 50 mm is expected at some locations in these areas, particularly during the afternoon and evening hours.
Misty conditions are anticipated during the early morning in parts of the Central, Sabaragamuwa and Uva provinces, and in the Ampara and Hambantota districts, potentially reducing visibility for motorists.
The general public is kindly advised to remain cautious and take necessary precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.
Sea Areas Forecast (Next 24 Hours)
The atmospheric disturbance over the Bay of Bengal has intensified into a low-pressure area and is currently positioned to the northeast of Sri Lanka. Under its influence, heavy showers or thundershowers and strong wind gusts of 50–60 kmph are possible in affected sea areas, leading to rough conditions at times.
Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the sea areas extending from Mannar to Trincomalee via Kankasanthurai and Mullaittivu. Winds will be north-westerly at 20–40 kmph. Naval and fishing communities are advised to stay alert to future forecasts and bulletins issued by the Department of Meteorology.
