Weather conditions across Sri Lanka on 08 February 2026 are expected to show a temporary improvement, as the prevailing showery conditions over the island are forecast to reduce from 08 to 11 February, according to the latest update from the Department of Meteorology. However, isolated showers, strong winds, and misty conditions will continue to affect several regions.
A few showers may occur in Uva province and in the Matale, Nuwara-Eliya, Ampara, Batticaloa and Polonnaruwa districts, particularly during the daytime. In addition, showers or thundershowers may develop at a few places after 2.00 p.m. in the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces, as well as in the Galle and Matara districts, bringing brief periods of heavy rain and lightning in some areas.
Fairly strong winds, with speeds of 30–40 kmph, can be expected at times over the eastern slopes of the central hills, and across the Northern, North-Central and North-Western provinces. Similar wind conditions are also likely in the Matale, Trincomalee and Hambantota districts, which may cause minor disruptions, particularly to outdoor activities, power supply lines, and temporary structures.
During the early morning hours, misty conditions are likely at some places in the Western, Sabaragamuwa and Central provinces, as well as in the Galle, Matara and Badulla districts, reducing visibility on roads, especially in hilly and low-lying areas.
In the sea areas around the island, showers will occur at several places off the coast extending from Hambantota to Trincomalee via Batticaloa. Meanwhile, showers or thundershowers may occur at a few places in the sea areas off the coast extending from Colombo to Hambantota via Galle during the evening or night.
Winds over the sea areas will be north-easterly, with speeds ranging between 30 and 40 kmph. Wind speeds may increase up to 50–55 kmph at times in the sea areas off the coast extending from Colombo to Kankasanthurai via Puttalam, and from Matara to Pottuvil via Hambantota. As a result, rough sea conditions are expected in these areas, while other sea areas will remain moderate.
The general public, fishermen and naval communities are strongly advised to take adequate precautions against temporarily strong gusty winds, lightning, and very rough seas during thundershowers.
