Weather conditions across Sri Lanka on 01 February 2026 are expected to remain unstable, with showers and thundershowers affecting many parts of the island throughout the day. Showers will occur at times in the Northern, North-Central, and Eastern provinces, as well as in the Matale and Nuwara Eliya districts. Fairly heavy rainfall exceeding 50 mm is likely at some places in the Northern Province and in the Trincomalee and Batticaloa districts, particularly during periods of intense rain.
In the Uva and North-Western provinces, several spells of showers are expected, contributing to persistent wet conditions. Meanwhile, showers or thundershowers are likely at several places in other areas of the island after 2.00 p.m., with fairly heavy falls above 50 mm possible at isolated locations during the late afternoon and evening hours. These weather events may be accompanied by temporary localized strong winds and lightning.
During the early hours of the morning, misty conditions can be expected at some places in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, and Central provinces, as well as in the Galle and Matara districts, which may reduce visibility, especially in highland and low-lying areas.
Showers or thundershowers will occur at several places in the sea areas off the coasts extending from Pottuvil to Kankasanthurai via Batticaloa and Trincomalee. Additionally, showers or thundershowers may develop in other sea areas around the island, mainly during the evening or night.
Winds will be north-easterly, with speeds ranging between 25 and 35 kmph, while wind speeds may increase up to 45–50 kmph at times in the sea areas from Kaluthara to Kankasanthurai via Colombo and Puttalam, and from Hambantota to Pottuvil. The sea will be fairly rough at times in these areas, while other sea regions will remain moderate. Very rough seas and strong gusty winds may occur temporarily during thundershowers.
The general public and maritime communities are advised to take adequate precautions to minimize possible weather-related impacts.
