Fairly heavy rainfall exceeding 75 millimetres is expected in several parts of Sri Lanka today (28), according to the Department of Meteorology. Residents in affected areas are advised to remain alert as wet weather conditions could lead to temporary disruptions.
Showers will occur at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Southern and North-Western provinces, as well as in the Kandy and Nuwara Eliya districts. Rainfall above 75 mm is likely at some locations, particularly in the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces and in Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Galle and Matara districts.
Meanwhile, showers or thundershowers may occur at a few places in the Uva Province and in the Ampara and Batticaloa districts after 2.00 p.m. Mainly dry weather is expected to prevail in other areas of the island.
Strong winds of around 40–50 kmph may occur at times over the western slopes of the Central Hills, Northern, North-Central and North-Western provinces, as well as in the Trincomalee, Monaragala, Hambantota and Matale districts.
The public is advised to take adequate precautions against temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers. People should avoid exposed locations during thunderstorms and remain alert to changing weather conditions.
The Department of Meteorology has also announced that the Sun will be directly overhead at different locations in Sri Lanka from today (28) until September 7. According to the department, Kokkuvil, Nallur, Kodikamam and Nagar Kovil are expected to experience the overhead Sun at around 12.11 p.m. today.
Residents are encouraged to follow official weather updates, particularly in areas expecting heavy rainfall and strong winds.
