The Department of Meteorology has forecast wet and windy weather for several parts of Sri Lanka on 02 August 2026, with fairly heavy rainfall expected in the central highlands and strong winds affecting many provinces. Residents, motorists, and fishermen are advised to remain alert as adverse weather conditions continue across the island.
Showers will occur at times in the Sabaragamuwa Province and in the Kandy and Nuwara Eliya districts. Fairly heavy rainfall exceeding 50 mm is likely at some locations in these areas, increasing the possibility of localized flooding and difficult travel conditions. Several spells of showers are also expected in the Western and North-Western provinces and in the Galle and Matara districts.
A few showers may occur in the Matale, Anuradhapura, and Hambantota districts. Meanwhile, isolated showers or thundershowers are possible after 2.00 p.m. in the Uva Province and in the Ampara and Batticaloa districts. Most other parts of the country are expected to experience mainly dry weather.
Strong winds of 40–50 kmph are expected at times over the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Southern, North-Central, Central, and North-Western provinces, as well as in the Mannar, Trincomalee, and Monaragala districts. The public is advised to take precautions against temporary localized strong winds and lightning associated with thundershowers.
Sea Areas Forecast
Marine conditions remain hazardous around much of the island. Showers are expected in the sea areas extending from Chilaw to Matara via Colombo and Galle. South-westerly winds will generally range between 30–40 kmph, but wind speeds may increase to 60–70 kmph in the sea areas from Puttalam to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle, and Hambantota. Winds may also reach 50–60 kmph from Trincomalee to Puttalam via Kankasanthurai.
The sea areas from Puttalam to Pottuvil are expected to be very rough, and the Department of Meteorology strongly advises naval and fishing communities not to venture into these waters until further notice. Seas from Trincomalee to Puttalam will also be rough, requiring extreme caution. Wave heights are forecast to reach 2.5 to 3.0 metres from Mannar to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle, and Hambantota, creating dangerous conditions for all marine activities.
