The Department of Meteorology has forecast a mix of showers, isolated thundershowers, and strong winds across parts of Sri Lanka on 12 July 2026, while mainly dry weather is expected to prevail over much of the island.
Several spells of showers are expected in the Sabaragamuwa Province and the Kandy and Nuwara Eliya districts throughout the day. A few light showers may also occur in the Western and North-Western provinces and in the Galle and Matara districts.
During the afternoon, after 2.00 p.m., showers or thundershowers may develop at a few locations in the Uva Province and in the Ampara and Batticaloa districts. Although rainfall will be limited elsewhere, residents are advised to remain alert for sudden changes in weather conditions.
Strong winds of 40–50 kmph are expected at times over the western slopes of the Central Hills, the North-Central Province, and in the Monaragala, Puttalam, Hambantota, Trincomalee, and Mannar districts. The public is urged to take necessary precautions to minimize damage caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning associated with thundershowers.
Sea Areas Forecast
Marine conditions will remain unsettled around the island during the next 24 hours. Showers or thundershowers are expected at a few places in the sea areas extending from Negombo to Galle via Colombo.
South-westerly winds will blow at speeds of 30–40 kmph, increasing to 50–60 kmph at times in the sea areas from Hambantota to Pottuvil and from Mannar to Chilaw via Puttalam. Winds in other sea areas may also reach 50 kmph.
The sea will be rough at times in these coastal waters, while other surrounding sea areas are expected to be fairly rough. Wave heights of 2.0 to 2.5 metres are likely in the sea area extending from Puttalam to Hambantota via Colombo. Fishermen and mariners are advised to exercise caution, as temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas can occur during thundershowers.
