The weather across Sri Lanka is expected to become increasingly unsettled from today, influenced by the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) and a developing low-level atmospheric disturbance near the island. As a result, a significant increase in rainfall is forecast over the next few days.
Showers or thundershowers will occur at most places across the island after 1.00 p.m., bringing widespread afternoon and evening rainfall. In addition, showers are likely during the morning hours in the Southern and Eastern provinces, indicating a more active weather pattern throughout the day.
Heavy rainfall exceeding 100 mm is expected at some locations, particularly in the Sabaragamuwa, Central, Uva, and North-Central provinces. These intense downpours may lead to localized flooding in vulnerable areas. Early morning misty conditions are also expected in parts of the Central, Sabaragamuwa, and Uva provinces, reducing visibility for motorists.
The public is strongly advised to take precautions against potential hazards such as temporary localized strong winds, lightning, and heavy rain during thundershowers.
Sea Areas Forecast (Next 24 Hours)
Showers or thundershowers will also affect sea areas around the island. Winds will be south-westerly at speeds of 25–35 kmph, occasionally increasing up to 40–45 kmph in coastal areas from Puttalam to Kankasanthurai via Mannar and from Matara to Pottuvil via Hambantota.
Sea conditions in these regions may become fairly rough at times, while other sea areas will remain moderate. Sudden strong gusty winds and very rough seas are possible during thundershowers, and naval and fishing communities are advised to remain vigilant.
