The weather conditions over Sri Lanka are currently being influenced by the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ), a key climatic feature that brings increased cloud formation and rainfall. According to the forecast, rainfall activity across the island is expected to intensify further after 6 May, signaling the onset of more widespread wet conditions in the coming days.
For 05 May, showers or thundershowers are expected to develop in several parts of the island, particularly after 2.00 p.m. These showers will mainly affect the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, North-Western, Uva, and Eastern provinces, as well as districts such as Polonnaruwa, Galle, Matara, and Mullaitivu. In some of these areas, especially in the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces and in Galle and Matara districts, fairly heavy rainfall exceeding 50 mm is likely.
In addition to afternoon showers, intermittent rainfall is also expected during the morning hours in the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces and in Puttalam, Galle, and Matara districts. Residents in these regions should be prepared for wet conditions throughout the day.
Fairly strong winds with speeds of 30–40 kmph may occur at times over the Northern and North-Central provinces and in the Hambantota district. Meanwhile, misty conditions are expected during the early morning hours in parts of the Central and Uva provinces and in the Ampara district, which could reduce visibility for motorists.
The general public is advised to take necessary precautions against temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

Sea Areas Forecast (Next 24 Hours)
Showers or thundershowers are expected in sea areas extending from Mannar to Pottuvil via Puttalam, Colombo, Galle, and Hambantota. Winds will be south-westerly at 25–35 kmph, increasing up to 50–60 kmph at times, particularly from Chilaw to Kankasanthurai and from Matara to Pottuvil.
Sea conditions in these regions will be rough at times, while other surrounding sea areas will remain moderate. Fishermen and naval communities are advised to remain vigilant, as temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas may occur during thundershowers.
