According to the Department of Meteorology, unsettled weather conditions are expected across several parts of Sri Lanka today, with showers and thundershowers likely to develop during the afternoon hours. Rainfall activity will mainly affect the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, North-Western and Eastern provinces, as well as the districts of Polonnaruwa, Galle and Matara after 2.00 p.m.
Fairly heavy rainfall exceeding 50 mm is likely at some locations in the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces and in the Galle and Matara districts. In addition, showers are expected during the morning hours in coastal areas of the Western Province and in Galle and Matara, bringing wet conditions from early in the day.
Fairly strong winds of 30–40 kmph may occur at times in the Northern and North-Central provinces and in the Hambantota district. Meanwhile, misty conditions are expected in parts of the Central, Sabaragamuwa and Uva provinces, as well as in the Ampara district during the early morning hours, reducing visibility in some areas.
The public is advised to remain cautious and take necessary precautions to minimize damage caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning associated with thundershowers.
Sea Areas Forecast (Next 24 Hours)
Showers or thundershowers are expected in sea areas surrounding the island, particularly from Mannar to Pottuvil via Puttalam, Colombo, Galle and Hambantota. Winds will be south-westerly at 25–35 kmph, increasing up to 50–60 kmph at times in sea areas from Chilaw to Kankasanthurai via Mannar and from Matara to Pottuvil via Hambantota.
The sea will be rough at times in these regions, while other sea areas will remain moderate. Fishermen and naval communities are advised to be vigilant, as strong gusty winds and very rough seas can occur during thundershowers.
