The Department of Meteorology Sri Lanka has issued a weather forecast indicating widespread showers and thundershowers across the island on 22 April 2026. Rainfall activity is expected to develop in most areas after 1.00 p.m., bringing unsettled weather conditions to many regions.
Heavy rainfall exceeding 100 mm is likely at some places in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, Uva, and Southern provinces, as well as in the Ampara district. These intense showers may lead to localized flooding and disruptions, especially in low-lying and urban areas. Additionally, showers may occur during the morning hours in Batticaloa, Ampara, and Hambantota districts, indicating a wet start to the day in these regions.
Misty conditions are expected during the early morning in parts of the Central, Sabaragamuwa, North-Central, and Uva provinces, along with the districts of Galle, Matara, Kalutara, Vavuniya, and Kurunegala. Motorists are advised to exercise caution due to reduced visibility.
The public is strongly advised to take necessary precautions against temporary localized strong winds and lightning associated with thundershowers.

Sea Areas Forecast (Next 24 Hours)
Showers or thundershowers are expected in sea areas from Mannar to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle, and Hambantota during the evening or night. Winds will be light and variable, ranging between 20–30 kmph. Sea conditions will remain slight; however, temporarily strong gusty winds and rough seas can occur during thundershowers.
