Enhanced Showery Conditions Expected Across Several Parts of Sri Lanka Over Next 36 Hours
Colombo, January 1, 2026 — The Department of Meteorology has forecast enhanced showery conditions across several regions of Sri Lanka during the next 36 hours, as a low-level atmospheric disturbance develops to the east of the island.
According to the latest official weather bulletin, rainfall activity is expected to intensify particularly in the Eastern, Northern, and Uva provinces over the coming days, bringing unsettled weather conditions to large parts of the country.
Showers are expected at times in the Eastern, Central, North-Central, and Uva provinces, with fairly heavy rainfall exceeding 50 mm likely at isolated locations in the Central and Uva provinces, as well as in the Batticaloa and Ampara districts.
Meanwhile, the Northern Province is expected to experience several spells of showers, contributing to wet conditions throughout the day.
In other parts of the island, showers or thundershowers may occur at a few places after 2.00 p.m., mainly due to daytime heating. Additionally, a few showers are possible in coastal areas of the North-Western and Western provinces, affecting districts along the western seaboard.
The Department of Meteorology also warns of misty conditions during the early morning hours in parts of the Sabaragamuwa and Central provinces, as well as in the Galle and Matara districts. Reduced visibility may pose risks to motorists, particularly in hilly and interior regions.
Members of the general public are strongly advised to take necessary precautions to minimize potential damage and safety risks caused by Temporary localized strong winds, Lightning strikes during thundershowers, Sudden heavy rainfall events.
Residents in landslide-prone and flood-prone areas are urged to remain vigilant and follow instructions issued by disaster management authorities.
Meteorologists note that the evolving atmospheric conditions may continue to influence rainfall patterns over the next few days, especially in the eastern half of the island.
