Heavy Rainfall and Thundershowers Expected Across Sri Lanka Over Next 36 Hours
The Department of Meteorology has issued a 36-hour weather forecast of widespread showers, thundershowers, and heavy rainfall across several parts of Sri Lanka from tonight through tomorrow, with a risk of localized flooding and weather-related hazards.
Showers are expected at times in the Central, North-Western, Uva, and North-Central provinces, as well as in the districts of Vavuniya, Mannar, Ampara, and Kegalle.
Meteorologists warn that heavy rainfall exceeding 100 mm is likely at some locations, raising concerns over flash floods, landslides, and waterlogging. Elsewhere across the island, isolated showers or thundershowers may occur during the night.
Tomorrow, showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the Northern, Eastern, Central, North-Central, North-Western, and Uva provinces. Fairly heavy rainfall above 75 mm is expected at some places in the Central, North-Western, and Uva provinces, as well as in Batticaloa and Ampara districts. In other parts of the island, afternoon and evening thundershowers are likely to develop after 2.00 p.m.
Misty conditions are forecast during the early morning hours in parts of the Sabaragamuwa and Central provinces, including the Galle and Matara districts, which may reduce visibility, particularly in hilly and low-lying areas.
The general public is urged to take adequate precautions to minimize damage caused by Temporary localized strong winds, Heavy rainfall, Lightning during thundershowers, Motorists, residents in landslide-prone areas, and those living near waterways are advised to remain alert and follow updates issued by the Department of Meteorology and disaster management authorities.
