Sri Lanka Weather Update: Afternoon Thundershowers and Gusty Winds Expected in Several Areas Today
Colombo – 27 December 2025:
Weather conditions across Sri Lanka today are expected to remain partly unsettled, with isolated showers in several regions, afternoon thundershowers in the southwest, and strong winds in exposed areas, according to the Department of Meteorology.
A few showers may occur in parts of the Northern, Eastern, and Uva Provinces, as well as in the Polonnaruwa, Matale, and Nuwara Eliya districts, mainly during the day.
During the afternoon and evening hours, showers or thundershowers are likely to develop in parts of the Galle, Matara, Ratnapura, and Kalutara districts, particularly after 2.00 p.m. These showers may be accompanied by lightning and brief periods of heavy rainfall.
Meteorologists also warn of fairly strong winds reaching up to 40 kmph at times over the eastern slopes of the central hills, the Northern Province, and in the Hambantota and Monaragala districts. Such conditions may cause temporary disruptions, especially in open and coastal areas.
In addition, misty conditions are expected during the morning hours in parts of the Western, Sabaragamuwa, and Central Provinces, as well as in the Badulla, Galle, and Matara districts, which may reduce visibility for motorists.
The public is advised to remain alert to sudden weather changes, avoid open areas during lightning, and take necessary precautions against strong winds and heavy rainfall during thundershowers.
