Sri Lanka is expected to experience unsettled weather conditions on 11 June 2026, with showers, thundershowers, and strong winds affecting many parts of the island. According to the latest forecast, showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, and North-Western provinces, as well as in the districts of Galle, Matara, Kandy, and Nuwara Eliya.
Fairly heavy rainfall exceeding 50 mm is likely at some locations in these areas. Residents are advised to remain vigilant, particularly in low-lying and flood-prone regions, where intense rainfall could lead to localized water accumulation.
Strong winds will continue to influence weather conditions across the country. Wind speeds of 40–50 kmph are expected at times over the western slopes of the central hills, the Northern and North-Central provinces, and the districts of Hambantota and Trincomalee. Other parts of the island can expect fairly strong winds ranging between 30–40 kmph.
The Department of Meteorology urges the public to take necessary precautions against temporary localized strong winds and lightning associated with thundershowers. Outdoor activities should be planned carefully, and people are advised to seek safe shelter during thunderstorms.
Sea Conditions and Marine Advisory
Weather conditions at sea remain hazardous, particularly for fishing and naval operations. Showers or thundershowers are expected at times in the sea areas extending from Chilaw to Hambantota via Colombo and Galle.
South-westerly winds will prevail with speeds of 30–40 kmph. However, wind speeds may increase significantly up to 60–70 kmph in sea areas from Kankasanthurai to Kalpitiya via Mannar. Winds may also reach 50–60 kmph in sea areas extending from Trincomalee to Kankasanthurai via Mullaittivu and from Kalpitiya to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle, and Hambantota.
The sea areas from Kankasanthurai to Kalpitiya via Mannar will be very rough at times. Fishing and naval communities are strongly advised not to venture into these waters until further notice. Other surrounding sea areas will be rough to fairly rough, with wave heights expected to increase to around 2.0–2.5 meters in waters from Mannar to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle, and Hambantota.
Mariners should remain alert, as temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas can occur during thundershowers.
