Sri Lanka is expected to experience unsettled weather conditions on 10 June 2026, with showers, thundershowers and strong winds affecting several parts of the country. According to the latest forecast issued at 2.00 p.m. on 09 June, rainfall will occur at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa and North-Western provinces, as well as in the districts of Galle, Matara, Kandy and Nuwara Eliya.
A few showers may also develop in the Anuradhapura and Hambantota districts. Residents in affected areas should be prepared for occasional rain and possible thunderstorms during the day.
Strong winds remain a major concern across the island. Wind speeds of 40–50 kmph are expected at times over the western slopes of the central hills, the Northern and North-Central provinces, and in the Hambantota and Trincomalee districts. Meanwhile, fairly strong winds of 30–40 kmph can be expected across most other regions.
The Department of Meteorology advises the public to take necessary precautions against temporary localized strong winds and lightning that may accompany thundershowers. Tree falls, minor property damage and disruptions to outdoor activities are possible in areas experiencing strong wind conditions.
Sea Conditions and Marine Warning
Weather conditions at sea are expected to be hazardous, particularly for fishing and naval activities. Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the sea areas extending from Chilaw to Hambantota via Colombo and Galle.
South-westerly winds will dominate surrounding sea areas, with wind speeds ranging from 30–40 kmph. However, winds may strengthen significantly, reaching 60–70 kmph at times in the sea areas from Kankasanthurai to Kalpitiya via Mannar. Winds may also increase to 50–60 kmph in the sea areas from Trincomalee to Kankasanthurai via Mullaittivu and from Kalpitiya to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle and Hambantota.
The sea areas off the coast from Kankasanthurai to Kalpitiya via Mannar will be very rough at times. Naval and fishing communities are strongly advised not to venture into these waters until further notice. Other coastal waters around the island will remain rough to fairly rough, with wave heights expected to reach between 2.0 and 2.5 metres in some areas.
Fishermen and maritime operators should closely monitor weather updates and exercise extreme caution due to the possibility of strong gusty winds and very rough seas during thundershowers.
