Sri Lanka is expected to experience unsettled weather conditions on Wednesday, July 1, 2026, with frequent showers, isolated thunderstorms, and strong winds affecting several parts of the island and surrounding sea areas.
According to the latest weather forecast issued at 2.00 p.m. on June 30, several spells of showers will occur in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, and North-Western provinces, as well as the Galle, Matara, Kandy, and Nuwara Eliya districts. Meanwhile, Uva Province and the Ampara and Batticaloa districts are likely to experience showers or thundershowers at several locations after 2.00 p.m.
Strong southwesterly winds are expected to continue across the country, with speeds of 40 to 50 km/h at times over the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, Southern, North-Central, and North-Western provinces, including Trincomalee District. Residents are advised to remain alert for temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thunderstorms.
Sea Conditions
Marine conditions are also expected to remain challenging over the next 24 hours. Showers or thundershowers will occur in sea areas extending from Chilaw to Matara via Colombo and Galle. Wind speeds over coastal waters will generally range from 30 to 40 km/h, increasing to 50 to 60 km/h in sea areas stretching from Kankasanthurai to Pottuvil via Mannar, Colombo, Galle, and Hambantota.
These sea areas are expected to be rough at times, with wave heights reaching 2.0 to 2.5 metres. Fishermen and naval operators are urged to exercise extreme caution, particularly during thunderstorms when temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas may develop.
