The Sri Lanka Department of Meteorology has warned that a low-pressure area may develop over the southeastern Bay of Bengal by 13 October 2026, potentially bringing increased rainfall across the island and surrounding sea areas over the coming days.
According to a special weather bulletin issued by the Department’s Natural Hazards Early Warning Centre at 11.00 a.m. on 12 October 2026, the developing weather system could influence rainfall conditions across Sri Lanka and nearby deep and shallow sea areas.
Low Chance of Depression Formation in the Next Five Days
The Department’s latest assessment indicates that the probability of the system developing into a depression remains low during the next 120 hours.
The bulletin reports no likelihood of cyclogenesis during the first 120 hours of the 168-hour forecast period. The probability is classified as low only during the final 24 hours, covering the period from 144 to 168 hours ahead.
Although the system is not currently expected to develop rapidly, changing conditions over the Bay of Bengal could affect the island’s weather in the coming days.
Public Urged to Monitor Weather Updates
The Department of Meteorology has advised the public, along with naval and fishing communities, to remain attentive to future weather forecasts and official bulletins.
Residents and those working at sea are encouraged to follow updates from the Department as the weather system develops.
