Amber Alert Issued for Heavy Rainfall in Sri Lanka Several Provinces

The Natural Hazards Early Warning Centre (NHEWC) has issued an Amber-level advisory warning of heavy rainfall affecting several parts of the country.

According to Bulletin No. 01, the advisory will be in effect from 8.30 a.m. on December 17 until 8.30 a.m. on December 18. The warning applies to the Eastern, Central and Uva provinces, as well as the Polonnaruwa District.

The NHEWC said the adverse weather conditions are due to the continued influence of an Easterly wave, which is expected to maintain prevailing showery conditions over the Northern and Eastern parts of the island over the next few days.

Heavy rainfall exceeding 100 millimetres is likely at some locations in the Eastern, Central and Uva provinces, including the Polonnaruwa District, the advisory noted.

The general public is urged to remain vigilant and take adequate precautions to minimise potential damage caused by heavy rain, strong winds and intense lightning during thundershowers.
