Rough Seas Expected in Several Coastal Areas, Fisherfolk Advised to Be Vigilant
December 15 — Showery conditions are expected to affect several sea areas around the island during the next 24 hours, according to the latest marine weather forecast issued at 5.30 a.m.
Showers will occur at several places in the sea areas off the coast extending from Kankasanthurai to Pottuvil via Trincomalee. Meanwhile, showers or thundershowers may occur at a few places in other sea areas around the island during the evening or night.
Winds will be north-easterly with speeds of around 30–40 kmph. However, wind speeds may increase up to 50–55 kmph at times in the sea areas off the coast extending from Kalutara to Trincomalee via Puttalam and Kankasanthurai, as well as from Hambantota to Pottuvil.
Sea conditions are expected to be rough at times in the sea areas off the coast from Kalutara to Trincomalee via Puttalam and Kankasanthurai, and from Hambantota to Pottuvil. Other sea areas around the island are expected to remain moderate.
The Meteorology Department warns that temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas may occur during thundershowers, and advises fishermen and naval communities to remain vigilant and take necessary safety precautions.
