Showers and Rough Seas Expected Around Sri Lanka Over the Next 24 Hours
December 12, 2025 — The Department of Meteorology has issued a marine weather forecast warning of showers, strong winds, and rough seas around the island during the next 24 hours.
According to the advisory released at 5.30 a.m., showers are likely in several sea areas from Puttalam to Pottuvil, covering regions off Mannar, Kankasanthurai, and Trincomalee. Other sea areas may also experience isolated showers or thundershowers, particularly during the evening or night.
North-easterly winds will prevail, with speeds ranging from 30–40 km/h, the forecast states. Wind speeds could increase to 50–55 km/h at times in the stretch of sea from Colombo to Mullaittivu via Puttalam and Kankasanthurai, posing risks to fishermen and maritime activities.
The sea condition between Colombo and Mullaittivu is expected to be rough at times, while the rest of the island’s surrounding waters will remain moderate. Authorities caution that temporarily strong gusts and very rough seas may develop during thundershowers, urging the naval and fishing communities to exercise caution.
