Showery weather is expected to continue across several parts of Sri Lanka on Sunday, 27 September, Showers will occur at times in the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces and in the districts of Galle, Matara, Kandy and Nuwara-Eliya.
Meanwhile, a few places in the Uva and Eastern provinces, as well as Mullaittivu district, may experience showers or thundershowers after 2.00 p.m. Temporary localized strong winds and lightning may accompany thundershowers, and the public is advised to take adequate precautions to minimize possible damage.
Rough Seas and Strong Winds
Showers are also expected in the sea areas extending from Chilaw to Matara via Colombo and Galle during the next 24 hours. South-westerly winds will prevail over the surrounding seas, with wind speeds of 30–40 kmph.
Wind speeds may increase up to 50–60 kmph at times in the sea areas extending from Kankasanthurai to Puttalam via Mannar and from Matara to Pottuvil via Hambantota. These areas will therefore experience rough sea conditions.
The wave height may increase to around 2.0–3.0 metres in the sea areas extending from Chilaw to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle and Matara. These conditions could affect marine activities, particularly along the western and southern coastal waters.
There is also a possibility of sea water inundation in nearshore areas from Beruwala to Matara via Galle. Naval and fishing communities operating in the affected sea areas, together with coastal communities living in the identified nearshore areas, are advised to remain vigilant and follow the latest weather information.
Temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas may occur during thundershowers, requiring extra caution from those engaged in fishing, boating and other marine activities.
