Showery weather is expected to increase across the southwestern parts of Sri Lanka during the next few days, with several areas likely to experience periods of rain on 20 September. According to the latest weather forecast, showers will occur at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa and North-Western provinces, as well as in the Galle, Matara, Kandy and Nuwara-Eliya districts.
Heavy rainfall of around 100 mm is possible at some locations in the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces and in Kandy and Nuwara-Eliya districts. Residents in these areas should remain alert to changing weather conditions, particularly during periods of persistent or heavy rain.
Meanwhile, showers or thundershowers are expected at several places in the Uva and Northern provinces and in the Batticaloa and Ampara districts after 2.00 p.m. Thundershowers may be accompanied by temporary localized strong winds and lightning. The public is therefore advised to take adequate precautions to minimize possible damage during thunderstorms.
Sea Weather Forecast for Sri Lanka
A low-pressure area is very likely to form over the Andaman Sea in the Bay of Bengal on 19 September and is expected to intensify during the next few days. Under its influence, wind speeds over the Bay of Bengal are expected to increase. Naval and fishing communities engaged in activities in these sea areas are advised to remain vigilant and closely follow future forecasts and bulletins.
Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the sea areas extending from Negombo to Hambantota via Colombo and Galle. Similar conditions may occur in several other sea areas during the evening or night.
South-westerly winds will prevail, with speeds of 30–40 kmph. Wind speeds may increase up to 50–60 kmph at times in the sea areas from Matara to Pottuvil via Hambantota. Winds may also reach up to 50 kmph in the sea areas extending from Puttalam to Kankasanthurai via Mannar.
Sea conditions will be rough at times from Matara to Pottuvil via Hambantota, while the sea areas from Puttalam to Kankasanthurai via Mannar will be fairly rough. Temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas may occur during thundershowers.
Wave heights may increase to around 2.0–2.5 metres in the sea areas extending from Puttalam to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle and Matara. Coastal communities, fishermen and other marine users are advised to closely monitor the latest weather updates before engaging in sea activities.
