Sri Lanka is expected to experience rainy and unsettled weather conditions in several parts of the country on Thursday, 17 September 2026, according to the latest weather forecast.
Showers will occur at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa and Southern provinces, bringing periods of rain to several areas. The North Western Province is also expected to receive several spells of showers. Similar conditions are forecast for the Kandy and Nuwara-Eliya districts, where residents and motorists should be prepared for occasional wet weather.
In the Uva and Eastern provinces, showers or thundershowers are expected at several places, particularly after 1.00 p.m. The Mullaittivu and Polonnaruwa districts may also experience showers or thundershowers during the afternoon. Thunderstorms could be accompanied by temporarily strong winds and lightning.
The public is advised to take adequate precautions during thundershowers to reduce the risk of damage caused by localized strong winds and lightning. People in affected areas should remain alert when thunderstorms develop, particularly during afternoon and evening hours.
Sea Areas Around Sri Lanka
Similar unsettled conditions are expected in the surrounding sea areas during the next 24 hours. Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the sea areas extending from Negombo to Hambantota via Colombo and Galle. A few other sea areas may also experience showers or thundershowers during the evening or night.
Winds will be mainly south-westerly, with speeds of around 25–35 kmph. Wind speeds may temporarily increase up to 50 kmph in the sea areas extending from Galle to Pottuvil via Matara and Hambantota.
The sea in this southern and southeastern coastal belt is expected to be fairly rough at times. During thundershowers, temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas may occur.
The public and sea users are advised to remain cautious and follow the latest weather updates, especially when thunderstorms or strong winds are observed.
