Weather Forecast for 16 September 2026 – Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka is expected to experience unsettled weather on 16 September as a low-level atmospheric disturbance continues to persist in the vicinity of the island. Under the influence of this system, cloudy skies and showers or thundershowers are expected at times across several provinces.
The Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, Uva, Eastern and Southern provinces are likely to receive periods of rainfall, with heavy falls exceeding 100 mm possible at some locations. Rainfall activity may be significant in these areas, particularly where showers become persistent. Showers or thundershowers are also expected at several places in other parts of the island after 1.00 p.m.
The public is advised to remain alert during thundershowers and take adequate precautions to minimize possible damage from temporary localized strong winds and lightning. People outdoors should seek safe shelter when thunderstorms develop and avoid exposed areas.
Sea Areas Forecast
Showers or thundershowers are expected at times in the sea areas extending from Negombo to Batticaloa via Colombo, Galle, Hambantota and Pottuvil during the next 24 hours. A few showers or thundershowers may also develop in other sea areas during the evening or night.
Winds around the island will be south-westerly or variable, with speeds of 25–35 kmph. Wind speeds may temporarily increase up to 50 kmph in the sea areas extending from Colombo to Pottuvil via Galle, Matara and Hambantota.
Sea conditions in these coastal waters are expected to be fairly rough at times. During thundershowers, temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas can occur. Naval, fishing and other maritime communities are advised to remain attentive to changing weather conditions and exercise caution when operating at sea.
