Significant rainfall has been recorded across several parts of Sri Lanka during the past 24 hours, with the highest rainfall concentrated in the Wet Zone and surrounding areas. Heavy rain has affected the Galle, Matara, Western, North-Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces, as well as the Nuwara Eliya and Badulla districts.
The Kalu Ganga basin recorded the highest rainfall, with nearly 200 mm reported around Bandaragama. Rainfall between 75 mm and 150 mm was also recorded around Ellagawa, Maha Oya and Millakanda. The Attanagalu Oya basin received between 100 mm and 125 mm around Dunamale, while parts of the Gin Ganga and Bentara Ganga basins recorded 75–100 mm.
The heavy rainfall has resulted in a noticeable rise in water levels in several major rivers, including the Nilwala Ganga, Gin Ganga, Bentara Ganga, Kalu Ganga, Kelani Ganga and Attanagalu Oya. Water levels in several middle and lower catchment areas have reached warning levels. The Dunamale station on the Attanagalu Oya is also reporting a high water level.
Further significant rainfall is forecast for today. People living in low-lying areas near major rivers, particularly the Nilwala Ganga, Gin Ganga, Attanagalu Oya, Kalu Ganga and Bentara Ganga, are advised to remain alert and closely follow official updates.
The Irrigation Department will continue monitoring river conditions and issue further announcements based on rainfall and water-level developments.
