Sri Lanka is expected to experience several spells of showers across parts of the country on Saturday, 12 September 2026.
Several spells of showers are expected in the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces, while Kandy, Nuwara-Eliya, Galle and Matara districts are also likely to receive intermittent rainfall. Meanwhile, showers or thundershowers may develop at several places in the Uva and Eastern provinces and in Mullaittivu district after 2.00 p.m. Fairly heavy rainfall exceeding 50 mm is possible in some locations within these areas.
Temporary localized strong winds and lightning may occur during thundershowers. The public is advised to take adequate precautions to minimize possible damage and remain attentive to changing weather conditions, particularly during thunderstorms.
Sea Condition
Sea conditions around Sri Lanka are also expected to be somewhat active during the next 24 hours. Showers may occur at a few places in the sea areas off the coast extending from Puttalam to Matara via Colombo and Galle.
South-westerly winds are expected to prevail over the surrounding sea areas, with speeds of around 30–40 kmph. Wind speeds may occasionally increase to 50–60 kmph in the sea areas extending from Hambantota to Pottuvil. Winds may also reach up to 50 kmph at times in the sea areas from Chilaw to Kankasanthurai via Mannar.
The sea areas off the coast from Hambantota to Pottuvil may become rough at times, while the areas from Chilaw to Kankasanthurai via Mannar may be fairly rough. Wave heights could increase to around 2.0–3.0 metres in the sea areas extending from Chilaw to Pottuvil via Galle, Matara and Hambantota.
There is also a possibility of seawater inundation over near-shore areas from Beruwala to Matara via Galle. Naval and fishing communities are advised to remain vigilant when engaging in activities in the affected sea areas.
